Welcome, Rebecca Jackson, Balance’s new CEO
Rebecca Jackson, Balance’s new CEO, started October 1, 2025.
Balance is thrilled to welcome Rebecca Jackson as Balance’s new Chief Executive Officer.
Rebecca brings a wealth of experience to Balance, with over 20 years in the intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) field—spanning both government funding and direct care—and 15 years of executive leadership. She holds a Graduate Certificate in Non-Profit Management from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and is known for her expertise in culture and performance development. Recently, she served at Centers for Independence, a Milwaukee-based organization supporting adults and children with disabilities, similar to Balance.
We sat down to ask Rebecca a few questions.
Q: Can you share a bit about your professional journey and what led you to Balance?
My professional journey to Balance began over two decades ago when I took a role in a community home supporting five adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) as a Direct Support Professional (DSP). That experience was truly transformative—it opened my eyes to the depth of human potential and the critical need for advocacy and inclusion. It didn’t take long for me to realize that this was more than a job—it was a calling. That role moved me to change my college major and shift the entire trajectory of my career.
Since then, I've dedicated my work to supporting people of all ages with IDD in various capacities, always driven by the belief that communities are stronger when everyone has the opportunity to thrive. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside passionate professionals, self-advocates, and dedicated families, each experience deepening my commitment to this field.
Joining Balance felt like a natural next step. The organization’s mission and values align perfectly with my own, and I’m proud to be part of a team that’s truly making a community impact.
Q: What drew you to the IDD field, and what keeps you passionate about it after 20+ years?
My first experience with people with disabilities—at least that I was aware of—came through my first job as a Direct Support Person in a community group home. From the start, it never felt like work. I built relationships with people I genuinely liked, helped them through their day, and simply enjoyed spending time with them. I looked forward to going to their house, hanging out, and having fun.
What drove me then—and still does now—was wanting the people I cared about to have the same opportunities I had: to do what they want to do, go where they want to go, and fully experience life. That simple desire sparked a passion that continues to this day.
Now, with more perspective, I see even more clearly that disability is deeply intersectional—it touches every part of human diversity. What started as a youthful passion has evolved into a lifelong commitment to equity, inclusion, and dignity.
Q: What excites you most about joining Balance?
I had the pleasure of visiting Balance before joining the team. Immediately, I felt a strong sense of community and shared purpose. I met people using services, Team Members, and Board Members—everyone was clearly passionate and engaged. The energy was real and positive. In short, I felt at home. It’s that genuine energy – the atmosphere filled with a sense of mission that I’m drawn to here.
Q: What are your top priorities for your first 90 days as CEO?
In my first 90 days, I’m focused on connecting with everyone in the Balance family and our partners— getting to know all the voices that make Balance what it is today. I’ll be diving into Balance’s story and how things operate today, while working closely with our incredible team to start shaping the path forward. These first few months are all about listening, learning, and laying the groundwork for our future together.
Q: Do you have a personal mantra or leadership philosophy you live by?
I have a few that guide me:
People first, always. This keeps my decisions grounded in what truly matters.
Be YOU — everyone else is taken. Staying authentic and true to oneself is key.
Life begins at the edge of your comfort zone. That’s where growth and real impact happen.
These mantras shape how I lead and live every day.
As we welcome Rebecca, we also want to extend our deepest gratitude to Alyse Sandow, who has served as Acting CEO with dedication and heart. Alyse’s leadership during this transitional period has been instrumental in maintaining continuity, supporting our staff, and preparing the organization for this next phase.
We’re grateful that Alyse will continue to play a key role in guiding Rebecca’s onboarding and helping shape the strategic direction of Balance as she returns to her role as Director of Programs.
Together, Rebecca and Alyse represent the strength, compassion, and vision that define Balance. We look forward to what’s ahead—and to continuing our mission of building inclusive communities where everyone belongs.
