New Focus on Fund Raising
At the start of 2011, Balance received notice that we would see immediate reductions in the contract rates for the services we provide through our largest contractor. This meant that we would loose about $170,000 in funding for the current budget year. As a result we implemented a number of budget cuts in order to prevent these changes from affecting the services we provide to individuals with developmental disabilities.
In addition, we also started a more aggressive effort to raise funds from other sources. In June Balance hired Christine Tischer as the Director of Development for the organization. Chris has more than 20 years of experience in fund development and will be leading the effort to raise support for the mission of Balance, Inc.
Chris is contacting foundations, corporations and individuals to request their support for meeting the needs of those with developmental disabilities in our communities. Chris can be contacted at ctischer@balanceinc.org.
United Way of Northern Ozaukee Community Impact Grant
The United Way of Northern Ozaukee has provided support for many years to Balance, Inc. through its annual community campaign. This summer the UWNO gave Balance an additional $3,000 Community Impact Grant to help those who are now on the waiting list for Family Care services.
Governor Walker’s Budget Repair Bill put a freeze on new referrals to the Family Care program throughout the state establishing a waiting list for those who are eligible. This is the state program for people with developmental disabilities, physical disabilities and the elderly.
The intent of the Community Impact Grant is for Balance to meet with individuals and families of those on the waiting list. Those meetings will focus on finding ways to help the individual and family during the time that they will be on the waiting list. Referrals for this service are coming from the Ozaukee County Aging and Disability Resource Center. The ADRC is charged with determining eligibility for Family Care services. Referrals can also come from individuals and families.
Balance Receives $5,000 Greater Milwaukee Foundation Grant
On September 12, 2011 Balance received a $5,000 grant from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation Luedke-Smith Fund. This grant is intended to help Balance with sustaining support for the organization.
