A Family Shares Their Experience with Balance

It’s the time of year when we are all encouraged to reflect on the events of the year. Certainly there are challenges and successes in every family. Over time the scales will tilt from good to bad and the best we can hope for is to have some sense of balance and to break even.

Rosann and I were taking stock of the year and realized that the Pace program at Balance, Inc. has been a major plus and a sometimes overlooked blessing for our family. Our son Ben is now a young man soon to be 23 years old. He has been a client of the Pace program since he was 18.

As you know Ben has a unique disability that lacks any specific definition or name. He does not speak, is G-tube feed, and is categorized as a spastic quadriplegic, and is transported using a specialized wheelchair.

Given these challenges we have been absolutely amazed how easily the caregivers whisk him away every morning to a day full of activities. He returns late every afternoon for a much needed rest. Festivals, concerts, county fairs, bowling, swimming and the lists go on. Your program and amazing staff allow and encourage clients like Ben to be active participants in the community and life. Rosann and I often joke that Ben has more activities in a day then we could do in a month.

The caregivers know Ben as well as we do. They are intuitive to his needs and are responsive to his communication level which consists of eye contact, facial expressions and sounds.

Your program has enriched Ben’s life as well as ours. Every day we are reminded of this blessing by the tired smile on Ben when we ask “How was your day?”.

Thank you for everything you do for Ben and his Peers. You are more than a care giver service. You really are an extension of our family.

Thank you again and have a Happy Holiday Season and Merry Christmas.

-Pete, Rosann, and Ben
